Our Apostolate
Foundation And Foundress:
May 9, 1889, the bells of St. John’s Cathedral rang out in joy in the City of Ragusa, Italy. An immense crown filled the Church. Baroness Maria Schinina and five companions in a touching Religious ceremony joined together to form the first nucleus of SISTERS OF THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS pronouncing the vows of obedience, poverty and chastity in the presence of Cardinal Benedetto La Vecchia.
Maria Schninia was born in Ragusa, Italy in the 10th of April 1844, into a deeply religious noble and wealthy family. She was baptized on the day of her birth. Baroness Schininia, as she was called, had a childhood which was serene and happy. She received First Holy Communion at the age of 7 and was confirmed at the age of 8.
During her adolescence, Maria developed a strong love and liking for style, dance and music. She was always the first to wear a new style of dress. If she ever saw anyone wear the same style of dress, she would go back home, take off the dress which she never wore again and put on another one. She loved dancing and she played the piano beautifully. She was a band leader. She directed the band of Ragusa on the occasion of the celebration of the unity of Italy.
After her father’s death, Baroness Maria Schininia changed her style of life totally. She gave up the elegant clothes she had been wearing to the poor, and put on the dress of a simple common lady. Bracing herself against the criticism of her social status she placed herself at the service of the poor and the needy. She dedicated herself to promoting devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. She lived and breathed all the spirituality of the Church’s teaching on the Sacred Heart.
On May 8th, 1889, she and five (5) other young companions founded our Religious Congregation of the Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. They labored for love of the Sacred Heart, serving the prisoners, minors, elderly, orphans, the sick, youths, all the poor and needy. On June 11th, 1910, after having well established her daughters and entrusting to them commandment of love: “Love one another! Love one another.” Mother Maria Schininia died at the age of 66.
Pope John Paul II beatified her on 4th November, 1990 in the presence of over twenty thousand people as Blessed Maria Schininia, Mother of the poor.
Our Charism:
Our Charism is preferential love to the poor. Everything the Sisters do is based on their Charism, the gift the Holy Spirit gave to Maria Schininia. The Sisters serve all people for love of the Heart of Jesus. They help in every way they can. The material and the spiritual poor and the needy, the dejected and the forgotten.
Spirituality:
Our spirituality is love and reparation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus lived through LOVE and SERVICE in union with the Heart of Jesus. Keeping nothing to ourselves, we consecrate to His Heart all our activities in reparation for the offences and failures of human kind. With love, we do reparation in imitation of Jesus crucified who offered Himself for the salvation of humanity and to aspire to a more perfect union with God by living the Gospel in its fullness.
