Our Apostolate

The Religious Institute of the Sisters of the Eucharistic Heart of Jesus is an Institute of Pontifical Right. In 1940 providence brought to the cost of West Africa, Cardinal Riberi as Papal Delegate to the British East and West Africa Colonies. In that capacity, he visited Lagos and was quick to notice the absence of African girls in the rank and file of the religious women and stressed the tremendous need for African Sisters in Nigeria.

Archbishop Leo Hale Taylor, SMA, the then Archbishop of Lagos took up the challenge to found a Religious Institute of ‘African Sisters.’ He founded the Institute of the Sisters of the Eucharistic Heart of Jesus on January 18, 1943.

Founder, Archbishop Leo Hale Taylor, SMA

The Institute started at Abeokuta with five Postulants, having as its first Novice Mistress and Superior General the late Mother Enda Barrett of the Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of Apostles (OLA). Later in 1946 the Novitiate and Mother House was moved to Ibonwon, Epe. The Institute was successfully ruled by the Sisters of Our Lady of Apostles until 1966 when the Institute got its autonomy and elected her first Nigerian Superior General, in the person of Rev. Mother Mary Veronica Odusanya, EHJ and the subsequent Superior Generals from the Sisters of the Eucharistic Heart of Jesus have governed the Institute successfully till date.
